The IIM have released their annual survey report on the UK Interim Market. This is is widely recognised as the most comprehensive and prestigious insight into the Interim Management market. Introduction

The 2026 IIM Interim Management Survey offers a timely view of a market that has been through a difficult period, but is beginning to show signs of renewed momentum.

For organisations navigating uncertainty, transformation and pressure on performance, the report reinforces something we see every day at Argon: the need for experienced interim leadership has not diminished. If anything, it has become more important.

The market remains challenging. Economic uncertainty, geopolitical instability, inflationary pressure, cost control and hesitant investment decisions continue to affect hiring confidence.

The report points to early improvement. However, clients remain cautious and are investing selectively. This places greater emphasis on proven capability, fast impact and measurable value – areas where the interim market is at its strongest.

For Argon, the report reinforces what we see across our network: our clients need senior leaders who can step into complex situations, create momentum and deliver outcomes.

Transformation remains at the heart of demand

According to this report, transformation continues to dominate the interim market. Business change and transformation remains the largest functional discipline, while project, programme, transformation and change roles represent around a quarter of all interim assignments.

This reflects the reality facing many organisations. Transformation is no longer a single programme owned by one function. It cuts across finance, technology, procurement, HR, supply chain, data, operating model and customer experience.

The challenge is often not the ambition, but the execution. Programmes become fragmented, leadership alignment weakens, data remains inconsistent and teams become fatigued. Experienced interim leaders help address this by bringing focus, pace, practical judgement and delivery experience.

They are not there simply to advise. They are there to help make change happen.

The value of proven interim leadership

The IIM report highlights the depth of experience across the interim community. For clients, this is highly valuable. In uncertain conditions, businesses need leaders who have seen complex situations before – they need people who can build credibility quickly, influence stakeholders and operate effectively under pressure.

At Argon, this is central to our model. Our network includes senior leaders with experience across transformation, finance, ERP, GBS, procurement, supply chain, HR, M&A, operational improvement and programme delivery.

That breadth matters as clients rarely need one isolated skill – they need people who can connect strategy, people, process, technology and commercial outcomes.

A renewed role for trusted interim providers

The report also shows a move back towards third-party sourced assignments. This is important because, in a cautious market, trust becomes more valuable.

Clients need confidence that they are accessing the right expertise quickly – a strong provider reduces risk, gives access to a wider and more relevant talent pool, speeds up decision-making and helps identify the right leader for the specific challenge.

For Argon, this is where our network-led approach is most valuable. Our relationships are built over time, giving us insight into the people we work with, the environments they suit and the value they can bring.

Senior expertise still commands value

The survey shows that average day rates have increased only slightly overall, but private sector rates have moved above £1,000 per day on average for the first time.

This suggests that while clients remain cost-conscious, they are still willing to invest in senior expertise where the value case is clear. The focus is increasingly on outcomes: faster delivery, stronger governance, reduced risk, better decision-making and improved performance.

The strongest interims do more than add capacity. They improve results. They bring independence, pace and experience, often leaving behind stronger teams and more resilient organisations.

Argon’s place in the market

Argon International is again recognised in the IIM Interim Service Provider rankings, placed 11th overall and remaining within the Platinum group.

We are proud of this recognition – it reflects the strength of our network, the quality of our relationships and our focus on senior interim and transformation leadership.

Argon’s position is distinctive because of our specialist focus, our senior network and our emphasis on relevance, quality and impact.

Looking ahead

The 2026 interim market is still challenging, but there are encouraging signs. Demand is returning in the areas where organisations most need experienced leadership: transformation, programme delivery, senior functional expertise, operational improvement and flexible executive capability.

For clients, the message is clear. In a period of uncertainty, delaying change is not always the safest option. Systems still need to be modernised. Costs still need to be controlled. Teams still need to be led. Businesses still need to perform.

The organisations that succeed will be those that bring in the right capability at the right time – experienced people who can move quickly, build trust, connect the dots and deliver.

That is the role of interim leadership. And it is where Argon continues to help clients create momentum, strengthen capability and deliver meaningful change.
